Having graduated at SOM with an MBA in 2013 and a PhD in 2016, it is safe to say that Dr. Umar Safdar knows a thing or two about AIT School of Management. When he visited Thailand, he also took the time to give a presentation to our students on Tuesday, August 18 entitled, “Exploring a Career in the Research Industry: Insights and Experience” in which he shared his career journey.

He discussed on what defines a researcher and clarified that researchers are “not only scientists in a lab coat” but rather, anyone who possesses a “high level of curiosity, loves to ask questions, are persistent in their questioning, and who can work well in a team”. These are the people who look at problems and wonder how to solve them or what data is out there to aid in the solutions.
He spent some time dispelling research myths and encouraged students to build up their networks since they will contribute greatly to their careers. He also discussed the many career paths that are available for SOM students if they choose a career in research, such as Marketing consultants and Academic Research, and took the time to answer questions from the students.
SOM is grateful for our alumnus who volunteered to share their experiences with our students, and we wish Dr. Umar all the best. SOM Alumni are always welcomed back any time.
